We hold observing sessions outside the Westwood House Hotel, weather permitting, after our monthly meetings, and occasionally from a dark site to the west of Galway City. Here we use large powerful telescopes to view the planets and various deep sky objects including galaxies, nebulae and star clusters. There are around 20 telescopes owned by members of the club and members are encouraged to bring them to observing sessions. Occasionally these sessions will be timed to include a major astronomical event like a lunar eclipse or a meteor shower. Photos below from observing session at St Brigits Garden, Moycullen and Renville Park, Oranmore during the Galway Astronomy Festival and at Renville Park.

Observing Sites

The society uses several observing sites, although most observing sessions take place at Renville Park, Oranmore, Tra Salin on the main road past Spiddal, The "old bog road" on the Spiddal-Moycullen Rd and some exceptionally dark places near Maam Cross in Connemara. Check our Forum regularly for updates on club observing sessions.
